Hello, I am editing this workspace as I wish to keep it active. The time, effort, and energy that went into creating it is worth keeping it active. I hope you are all well.

Target Audience: ESOL Educators, all levels

Skill Level: No prerequisite knowledge required

BYOD / BYOT: Digital tool or mobile device is required. An iPad is the optimal device.

This workshop will be animated by a panel of experienced CALL practitioners with specialized knowledge and expertise in using iPads with a variety of second language learners. The presenters will briefly review the research on the use of iPads in CALL, provide a rationale for the use of these digital tools in second language classrooms (Schrock, 2014) , and model how to integrate and implement a variety of applications  to enhance any educational setting (Carrington, 2013). Participants will be guided through hands-on, interactive breakout sessions on the following topics: (1.) iPad implementation from an administrative point of view, (2.) the technical constraints and affordances of preparing for, guiding, and pedagogically supporting implementation, (3.) exploration of the myriad applications available,  and (4.) integration of iPads across the four skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking, with an emphasis on the innovative and creative integration of these skills through project based learning.

Participants will be invited to join a Google Community providing them the opportunity to create a Professional Learning  Community/Network prior to the ISTE Conference 2015. They will also be invited to join a wiki creating  an opportunity to ‘flip the workshop’.  Critical information, applications, activities, lesson plans, project based learning exemplars, and web links will be shared through the wiki. The PLC/PLN will be developed and sustained through the wiki and the Google Community before, during and after the workshop. Examples of student created work and challenge based learning will demonstrate the versatility, utility and possibilities of  iPad, and applications, which can be implemented in a variety of educational settings for second language learners.

Objectives, Schedule, and Description of Sessions:

Objectives:

  • Participants will develop expertise in the use of iPads, a variety of applications, project based learning,  challenge based learning, and CALL techniques (flipped classroom, online environments,  Web 2.0 tools, m-Learning, MALL, etc).

  • Participants will develop plans to integrate  iPads / CALL in their educational settings based on information presented in the workshop with guidance and modeling from presenters.

  • Discussions will focus on how to implement iPads, with specific emphasis on effective and appropriate applications, how to implement them in their individual educational communities, and how to assess the effectiveness of their implementation.

  • Participants will become part of a continued Community of Practice by contributing to a wiki containing information and links on CALL, iPads, and the topics to be discussed/investigated in the workshop. This wiki will be sustained and monitored by the presenters and participants, leading up to and after the institute, as part of  membership in a Professional Learning Community / Network.
